When\u00a0Royal Caribbean put out a Facebook call for volunteers\u00a0to help test out the line’s stringent new COVID-19 protocols, more than 100,000 cooped-up explorers raised their digital hands. So even as cruise companies continue to cancel trips as they try to navigate the pandemic, consumers, it seems, can’t wait to go.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
“Travelers are picking up their dreams and trying to make them reality as fast as possible,” says Barbara Muckermann, chief marketing officer of Silversea Cruises.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
Much remains uncertain for cruising in the coming months, but\u00a0the industry has used last year’s unprecedented pause\u00a0to prepare for a grand return. Here are four promising developments to watch.<\/p>\n
The pandemic slowed both the delivery and the debuts of new vessels. But this April, at the very start of European yachting season, the first ship from the\u00a0Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection, the 298-passenger\u00a0Evrima,<\/em>\u00a0is scheduled to make its long-awaited first trip.\u00a0Regent’s\u00a0Seven Seas Splendor<\/em>\u00a0will also sail the Mediterranean this year.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Guests will get to enjoy\u00a0Virgin Voyages’ new 2,770-passenger, adults-only\u00a0Scarlet Lady<\/em>\u00a0\u2014 and its sister ship,\u00a0Valiant Lady,<\/em>\u00a0due later this year.\u00a0Silversea\u00a0has three ships slated to make their inaugural trips in 2021.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n The new expedition line\u00a0Atlas Ocean Voyages\u00a0plans to launch its first ship, the 196-passenger\u00a0World Navigator,<\/em>\u00a0with all-inclusive fares that cover even emergency medical-evacuation insurance.\u00a0Celebrity Cruises\u00a0will unveil the 2,918-passenger\u00a0Celebrity Apex<\/em>\u00a0\u2014 a sister to the well-regarded\u00a0Celebrity Edge<\/em>\u00a0\u2014 along with new all-inclusive pricing across the fleet. And\u00a0Carnival Cruise Lines\u00a0will make a splash with its 5,282-passenger\u00a0Mardi Gras,<\/em>\u00a0complete with an onboard roller coaster, a first for the industry. The\u00a0Mardi Gras<\/em>\u00a0will also be Carnival Corporation’s fourth ship to run on cleaner-burning liquefied natural gas.<\/p>\n Around 1.3 million cruisers had to cancel their plans to visit the state in 2020. For those who want to try again this year, there are new options:\u00a0Lindblad Expeditions\u00a0plans to send five ships to\u00a0Alaska\u00a0in 2021.
