Ninety two miles due north of
Caracas lies Venezuela's largest group of islands, the archipelago of Los
Roques.
Surrounded by the Caribbean Sea, the archipelago comprises about 340
islets curving around a central lagoon. Most are uninhabited, unnamed and
display a diverse topography. Ten thousand years ago, volcanic eruptions
opened the sea floor and this chain of lava was created. Over the centuries,
exfoliation and the winds wore away the sharp volcanic peaks into chunks of
rock that give way to the highlands of sand-covered limestone. Tropical
flatlands sweep FROM the plateau to the beaches below. Today this
constitutes a pristine, virgin underwater environment that is especially
appreciated by scuba divers, snorkelers and bone fishermen.
Los Roques is the new spot on the map on its way to becoming a
picture-perfect destination as it appeals to those who treasure unspoiled
natural beauty. Long stretches of powdery white sand beaches and miles of
coral reef with crystal-clear water invite swimming and snorkeling. Small
lizards, chameleons, iguanas, bird nesting sites and cactus vegetation on
some islands add to the atoll's variety. Unhurried and uncrowded, these tiny
islands wait to be discovered by those who wish to get away FROM it all.
There are no organized excursions available in this deserted island paradise
but we urge you to come ashore and enjoy a few hours of tropical magic. |
