With
its active volcano, Reunion is often likened to Hawaii. Two thirds of the
island's western side is covered by mountain ranges; the 9,200-foot Piton
des Neiges is the highest point. Between the alpine peaks and the coast grow
palm trees, screw pines, casuarinas, sugar cane, spices, fruit and vegetable
crops, tropical rain forests and an abundance of flowers, making the island
appear as one big garden.
Pier Information.
The ship is scheduled to dock at Pointe des
Galets' New Port. Le Port town is about half a mile FROM the pier; due
to the Frormity of the port, walking is not recommended. The capital of
St. Denis lies 12 miles north of the port. Taxis may have to be
requested. |
Shopping.
The best selection of shops is found in St.
Denis and the seaside resort of St. Gilles, 9 miles south FROM the port.
Another choice is the Eperon Craft Village, located 9 miles up in the
hills. |
Cuisine.
There is a choice of French, Indian, Chinese
and Creole meals, with restaurants specializing in each. Islanders
enjoy wine with their meals. Also, try
the local beer, Biere Bourbon. In general, expect prices to be rather
high. |
Other Sights
St. Denis. The island's attractive, clean capital city is
12 miles north FROM the port. Besides an array of fairly expensive shops
and restaurants, it also features a variety of impressive Creole
mansions along the Rue de Paris. There are art galleries and a Botanical
Garden with the Natural History Museum that you may want to explore.
Please keep in mind that most everything closes down between 12 noon and
2 p.m.
St. Gilles. About nine miles south is this seaside resort
with some of the best hotels and restaurants on the island. The resort
is especially crowded on weekEnd. Outside of town, the main attraction
is the Ravine of St. Gilles, an area encompassing a stunning series of
waterfalls and pools.
Beaches. The best beaches are found in and around St.
Gilles; snorkeling and scuba diving can be arranged here.
Golf. The 18-hole golf course of the Club de Bourbon is 24
miles FROM the port; only 12 miles away is the Bassin Bleu 9-hole golf
course. Guests interested in playing golf may check with the Tour Office
on board for availability. |
