Tarragona, 60 miles southwest of Barcelona, sits picturesquely 525 feet above the Mediterranean. The old town occupies the southern side of the rocky hill. The Palace of Augustus houses an archaeological museum that provides an interesting study of the city's origin. Of major interest, too, are the Roman amphitheater and the cathedral, built in the 12th and 13th centuries on a site that had previously been occupied by a Roman temple and Views of the sea and coast can be had from the Balcon del Mediterraneo, at the south end of the tree-lined Rambla Nova. Pier Information . Your ship is scheduled to dock at Muelle Costa. The distance to the center of town is approximately half a mile. Taxis are generally available on the pier.

Shopping . Shop at the market, along the Rambla Nova, and the pedestrian streets in the city center (the Carre Major and Carre Mendez Nunez). The old town boasts numerous antique shops and art galleries .

Cuisine . Tarragona's tasty local dishes consist of seafood blended with olive oil, hazelnuts, almonds, sweet peppers, onions, garlic, and tomatoes.

Passeig Arqueologic. This half-mile walk, shaded by cypresses, passes 2200-year-old city walls, grottos, gardens, and a bronze statue of Augustus.

Roman Pretorium. This 2,000-year old fortress is said to be the birthplace of Pontius Pilate.

Archaeological Museum. Housing
