| Our voyage starts with an overnight in Hong Kong - time to flex the credit card in the shopping malls, satisfy your appetite at the Temple Street Night Market, and take in the views from Victoria Peak. Next, Xiamen, where some of China's best beaches can be found, before a day at sea takes us to Shanghai for two nights for an irresistible mix of old and new, from the historic streets of the French Concession to shiny modern Pudong. Now we sail to Busan, South Korea, for bustling street markets and Buddhist temples, then we cross to Japan and Hiroshima, where there are moving monuments to contemplate, such as the Peace Park. Another day at sea takes us to Kobe for an overnight; take a stroll along Museum Road, studded with modern art installations. Then comes the spectacle of Shimizu's sweeping bay in the shadow of Mount Fuji, and the neon city of Tokyo, where we overnight. We continue along the coast of Japan to Hitachinaka, a young city renowned for its blossom-filled oceanfront park, and then Aomori with its apple and cherry orchards set against the Hakkoda Mountains. In Hakodate, sip tea looking over the rose garden at the Former British Consulate, and in Kushiro see red-crowned cranes, which thrive on the marshes. Now we take to the ocean wave, crossing the International Dateline as we sail to Alaska. Our first stop is Kodiak, where natural delights include bald eagles soaring overhead. The harbor at Homer promises its tales of pioneer life, and at Seward you can hike to the fjords and dine on fresh halibut. We then cruise past the Hubbard Glacier, the longest tidewater glacier in North America, bound for Skagway, with its Gold Rush-era buildings. In Alaska's original capital, Sitka, the onion-shaped dome of Saint Michael's is a visual reminder of the days when this was Russian territory, while Icy Strait Point offers the thrills and spills of the world's largest ziprider and other outdoor activities. Onwards to Ketchikan, where many of the buildings balance on stilts over the water. Finally we enter Canadian waters, passing through the Seymour Narrows before arriving in the lively city of Vancouver. | ||
