center can be reached on foot. Taxis are generally available on the pier
but may be in limited supply on Sundays.
North of Place Foch are Ajaccio's major shopping streets.
On Sundays most shops are closed in town. Some tourist-oriented shops
may be open in the morning.
Corsican cuisine features wild boar, goat, mutton,
sausages and cheeses. Azimuno is a marvelous fish soup. Around the main
square are outdoor cafes, which make a perfect place to people-watch
while enjoying a cold drink or a coffee.
Take a walk around town, admiring the many statues and
monuments of the town's local hero. The main street is the Cours
Napoleon. The old city is bounded by Place Foch, Place de Gaulle and the
mid-16th-century Citadelle.
This tree-shaded square is a favorite meeting point of locals.
The house were Napoleon was born and lived until he was nine years old
is now a museum. It features assorted memorabilia and a death mask made
about two days after Napoleon's death in May of 1821. On Sundays the
museum is only open in the morning.
