Exploring
Norway's fjord region is a memorable experience for even the most seasoned
traveler. Cutting deep into the mountainous land, craggy rock walls and
overhanging cliffs characterize the scenic wonder of the fjords.
Gudvangen lies at the head of the Naerofjord, an offspring of the Sognefjord
and Aurlandsfjord. Waterfalls line the steep mountainsides and goat farms
lie scattered about the green valleys. At one time, this tiny spot was
bustling with some 500 old-fashioned, one-horsepower "jaunting cars" which
were used to carry people around the area, especially into the higher
reaches.
Surrounded by peaks as high as 5,000 feet, and reached by a roadway with 13
hairpin turns, Gudvangen is an important ferry point and a popular stopover
for motorists. The usually mild climate encourages visitors to linger.
While here, most travelers include a trip to the Stalheimfossen waterfall.
The gushing waters plunge down more than 400 feet in one thundering
spectacle. Jordalsnuten is another favorite site, known locally as "Norway's
Sugar Loaf." |
