Sicily is the largest of the Mediterranean
islands. The east coast of Sicily is considered by many to be its most
magnificent. Lovely Taormina was called "the greatest work of art and
nature" by Goethe in his Italian Journey. Situated 673 feet above the Ionian
Sea with Mount Etna as a spectacular backdrop, this storybook town of
sculpted gardens, stately palaces and ancient monuments is easily one of
Sicily's most striking sites.
There is much to see and do here; the main attractions in Taormina have
to be seen on foot. To reach Taormina requires a six-mile drive, since the
ship is anchored in the Bay of Giardini Naxos.
Pier Information.
The ship is scheduled to anchor in Giardini Bay at Naxos, six miles
FROM Taormina. Guests will be taken ashore by tender. Taxis are
generally available. |
Shopping.
The best shopping in Taormina is along the Corso Umberto. Good buys
include ceramics, antiques, wrought iron sculptures and embroidered
linens. |
Cuisine.
Traditional Sicilian specialties include seafood and dishes made
with lemons, oranges, olives or almonds. For dessert, try cassata, a
fruited ice cream cake. Sample some of the excellent local wines. |
Other Sights
Public Gardens. Incredible vistas are available FROM Taormina's
Public Gardens, which are filled with exotic flowers and plants.
Museo Archaeologico. In Giardini-Naxos, close to the pier, this
Bourbon fort contains a fine museum. The entrance is via a garden
bisected by an ancient lava flow.
Internet Connection. An Internet cafe is located on the main
street, Corso Umberto, in Taormina |
