Pier Information. The ship is scheduled to
dock at the Port of Zanzibar. The town center can be reached in
approximately 15 minutes on foot, or via a short taxi ride. If you are
considering walking, keep in mind that the climate is hot and humid.
Taxis are generally available at the pier. |
Shopping. Spices, leatherwork, gold and
silver jewelry, local crafts, colorful fabrics, and Zanzibar wooden
chests are popular. Small shops can be found along the narrow streets in
the center of Stone Town. When buying wooden articles be sure to check
whether the wood has been treated for termites. The local currency is
the shilling. |
Cuisine. Seafood (kingfish, barracuda and
wahoo) is a good choice as are curried dishes and fresh local fruit.
Typical dishes include mishikaki, a delicious charcoal-broiled meat
dish, and wali na nyam, a curried beef. The restaurants in major hotels
usually are your best option. |
Other Sights
Local Market. A stroll through the market truly reveals local
color. An incredible display of fruits, vegetables, spices, animals, and
other daily necessities provides a sight to be remembered.
Stone Town. Stroll through the ancient streets and stop at small
workshops where artisans ply their trade with designs taught to them by
their forefathers.
Countryside and Beaches. A drive into the countryside offers
gleaming white sand beaches, ruins of once-lovely summer palaces, and
lush clove and coconut plantations.
Jozani Forest Reserve. About a 40-minute drive FROM town, this
nature preserve is home to the rare Colobus monkey. Be aware that the
monkeys live high up in the trees and seeing them is by no means
guaranteed.
Kidichi Persian Baths. A short drive FROM town are the remains of
this former summer residence; the baths are the best part, preserved
under domed roofs. They were built in the last century by Sultan Sayyid
for his Persian wife, Princess Shaharzad.
Golf.Zanzibar Golf Club
has a woodland setting centered around a large lake. The course is
stunning to look at, almost picturesque off the first tee, with reeds
edging the water that reflects the surrounding scenery. This is an 18
-hole, par 72, 7364 yard course. |
